Another Wrestling Legend Passes Away

Dusty Rhodes isn’t the only former WWE/WCW  wrestler to pass away this year; former WWE/WCW star Roddy Piper passed away last Friday due to cardiac arrest he had while sleeping. Piper was famous not only for his talk show Piper’s Pit; he was also famous in the mid 80’s for having a huge rivalry with WWE Champion Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. Piper and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff (with “Cowboy” Bob Orton in their corner) would face Hogan and Mr. T. (with Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka in their corner)  at WrestleMania in 1985, and Piper would later face Mr. T. in a Boxing match the following year at WrestleMania II, but lost via DQ after body slamming Mr. T.The next year, Piper would face “Adorable” Adrian Adonis in a Hair VS Hair Match (which was more of a retirement match so Piper could star in movies), but would later return to the ring for another Piper’s Pit segment at WrestleMania V. In one of my favorite segments, Morton Downey Jr. blew smoke from his cigarettes in Piper’s face and Piper hesitated by blowing Jr. with a fire extinguisher (which he almost hit Jr. on the head with but was stopped by Gorilla Monsoon’s shouting voice of reason). Roddy never won a world title while in WWE/WCW, but would go on to hold the WWE Intercontinental title and half of the World Tag Team Championship with Ric Flair (after beating the Spirit Squad). I could go on about more of Roddy’s career highlights, but I’m sure I’ve bored everyone by now. It is sad Piper only passed away at the age of 61, but on Monday Night Raw, WWE held a 10 bell salute to the “Rowdy One.” I’m sure I speak for everybody when I say, RIP, Roddy.
