Former Jets QB Picked Up by AFC East Rival

After being cut by the NY Jets, QB Matt Simms was picked up off of waivers by the Buffalo Bills about 24hrs after his release. Simms, whose dad (Phil Simms) and brother (Chris Simms) is reunited with former Jets coach Rex Ryan. The Bills currently have 4 QB’s on the roster, so to make room for Simms, the Bills released QB Jeff Tuel. Time will only tell if Sims makes the 53 man roster, but he’ll have to beat out E.J. Manuel, Matt Cassel, and Tyrod Taylor. During his 3yr stint with the Jets, Simms threw 1 TD and played in 4 games completing 19/39 passes for 195 yrds and 1 INT, and rushed on 6 attempts for 39 yards. Last season, he played against the Kansas City Chiefs in a 23-13 loss, and played in relief of a struggling Geno Smith in a 37-14 loss to Buffalo in 2013. During his tenure at Tennessee, Sims threw for 1,779 yards, 8 TD, and 8 INT’s, and rushed for a -130 yards with 2 TD’s on 53 attempts. Simm’s breakout season was his Junior season as he threw for 1,460 yards and 8 TD’s, but was benched in favor of QB Tyler Bray due to poor play. Before his stint at Tennessee, Simms was offered a scholarship to play for Louisville, but after seeing little time there as a freshman, transferred to El Camino College in Torrence, CA; in his sophomore campaign, Sims threw for over 2000 yards and led El Camino to its 4th straight league title. Upon graduating Tennessee, Simms was signed by the Jets in May 2012 as an UFA, but released 3yrs later to make room for rookie Baylor QB Bryce Petty.

Breaking: Buffalo QB Probably Won’t Make Roster

Not so good news for Buffalo fans: according to WKBW’s Joe Buscaglia, a Buffalo Bills beat reporter, EJ Manuel might not make a spot on the 53 man roster this season. Buscaglia reports that Manuel could be done by the end of training camp unless the organization doesn’t see “serious progress” from him. The Bills spent a first round pick (number 16 overall) on Manuel in the 2013 NFL draft, and his contract is fully guaranteed; if the Bills cut Manuel, they’ll still owe him $2.8 million for the next two years, and will have a huge cap hit if they cut him. Currently there are 3 other QB’s on the roster that Manuel would have to beat out in order to retain a roster spot: Tyrod Taylor, Jeff Tuel, and veteran QB Matt Cassel. In his rookie season, Manuel threw 11 TD’s and 9 INT’s for 1,972 yards and rushed 53 attempts for 186 yards with 2 TD. Last season, Manuel threw for 838 yards with 5 TD’s and 3 INT’s, and rushed on 16 attempts for 58 yards with 1 TD. In his two seasons with Buffalo, Manuel has been sacked 34 times and started 14 of 15 games. One can only wonder if Manuel will make a roster spot, but he’s not a total bust and could possibly be picked up by another team if cut.
