Tennessee’s Team 121: Big Hype, Big Dreams, Bigger Busts

Tennessee wrapped up its season finale last night in an embarrassing blow out (42-24) to in state rival Vandy. Team 121 and its seniors failed to even qualify for a bowl this season, and finishes winless in SEC play (0-8) for the first time since the days of Bill Battle. Coach Butch Jones suffered because of the team’s lackluster performances this year and got canned with two games left (in which he voluntarily declined to coach). There’s no doubt that this team was all hyped to win the SEC East this season, but maybe it was doomed from the very start…

After heat from the fans, former Tennessee offensive coordinator Mike DeBord decided to leave the university and take the same job at Indiana to be closer to family. Now Tennessee could have gone out and hired say Chip Kelly or Mike Helfrich, but oh, no; Butch Jones decided to retain TE’s coach Larry Scott (basically so he wouldn’t bolt for another coaching job) and use him as the offensive coordinator instead Scott is an unproven coordinator and caught severe heat from the fans early in the season…especially after 10+ quarters of play without scoring a score on offense. QB Quinten Dormady struggled in the pocket and wouldn’t run to save his life, and even led to a shutout against top ranked Georgia at the time. Technically, the offense struggled all season, and there were no players that would step up and make huge plays, and partially Tennessee had NO offensive line. The O-Line has been one of the worst spots on the team since Butch Jones took over for Derek Dooley. On the opposite side, the defense couldn’t really execute with the offense not staying out on the field long enough to give them a break to rest.

Despite all of the offensive and defensive woes, the next coach coming in definitely has the talent to work with. Will McBride is a true freshman has shown some great flashes in the games he played. Jarrett Guarantano no doubt has shown some great flashes as well.  RB’s John Kelly, Carlos Fils-amie, Tim Jordan, and Ty Chandler need more offensive line help, but are really talented RB’s. Daniel Bituli, Darrell Taylor, Shy Tuttle, and Reggie McKenzie Jr have a lot of talent on the defensive side.

To close, I just gotta say thank you for your services Butch and the bowl wins, but you sir were just not the right guy for the job and somehow lost the team this year big time; it was time for your bricks to fall. And to John Currie, here’s my message: Unless you want to be run out of Tennessee, you better find the best coach out there that knows how to win and who won’t lose his players, and will fully develop them. Also, I speak as a fan and for the abysmal performance your football team put on, I want my $390+ tax for my season tics back!
